As you probably know, escape rooms started out in the world of video games, but they didn’t stop there. They’ve also made their way onto the big screen. Here’s a list of the best escape room movies to give you some ideas before you try one yourself.

1. SAW

Of course, you can’t talk about escape rooms without mentioning the hugely famous Saw saga. In fact, we could have written this entire article just about the installments of this saga, but that wouldn’t be much fun. The first Saw movie came out in 2004 and the eighth (the latest so far) was released this year, so if you’re into this genre, you’ll have plenty to keep you entertained for a while.

In this horror saga, Jigsaw kidnaps and traps his victims, giving them a test to atone for their sins. The victims must decide if they want to endure pain and survive or do nothing and die. Meanwhile, Jigsaw guides them through the challenges acting as the Game Master with the help of his iconic puppet.

2. CUBE

Cube is a psychological thriller that’s part of a trilogy. The first film debuted in 1997, but the two subsequent installments are more recent: Cube 2: hypercube (2002) and Cube Zero (2004).

The movie starts with a group of people waking up in a cube-shaped room. None of them knows why they’re there or how they got there, so they come up with their own theories, like being part of a government experiment. Naturally, they attempt to escape by moving through other rooms (also cube-shaped) and soon discover it won’t be easy, since some rooms have deadly traps and the cubes are constantly shifting.

The traps in the rooms get more advanced with each installment, making the challenges more high-tech, harder to solve, and, of course, just as entertaining to watch!

3. EXAM

Exam is a thriller released in 2009. It’s set in the near future, where a large portion of the population is infected by a deadly disease. Only one company produces the drug that neutralizes it, making it the most powerful company in the world. But like any company, it needs to hire new employees. This is the scenario for those vying for a job there. Each candidate has strong reasons for wanting the job but there’s only one vacancy. When the interviewer arrives, they’re given a sheet of paper and told the one rule of the exam: the paper must not be damaged.

5. LA HABITACIÓN DE FERMAT

You can probably guess the genre of this movie. Indeed, it’s another psychological thriller. La habitación de Fermat, which premiered in 2007, brings together a group of mathematicians in a room to have dinner and then face the greatest challenge of their lives. Their survival depends on whether or not they can solve the challenge.
